How to copy content onto an Android device with a Mac

Author: Arthur Ricky  //  Category: Apple, iPhone

Until Apple jumps in with its hypothetical offering, the Google Nexus 7 may be the best small-sized tablet on the market. With a US$200 starting price tag, some Mac users may be tempted to pick one up just to see what all the fuss is about.

Android devices, though, don’t easily sync to a Mac like the iPad or the iPhone. To help new Android owners manage their device, Macworld has a short, informational video that steps you through the process of transferring items to and from your device. (Hint: you use the Android File transfer app.)

You can check out the video by Christopher Breen on Macworld’s website.

TUAW Origin Stories: Elphi

Author: ally keer  //  Category: Apple, iPhone

Sadly this origin story ended before it began. While at WWDC we spoke to the creators of Elphi, a smart, remote-controllable AC outlet. Last night their Kickstarter project ended almost $30,000 shy of their goal. It’s a shame, since this looked like a really promising product that would have been quite useful to a great number of people. We wrote it up almost immediately, to no avail.

Check out the video below to learn more (here’s hoping they can try some other method of funding?). Also, check back on Fridays for more TUAW Origin Stories, where we talk about why developers create their apps.

iPad app teaches Photoshop CS6 in an engaging manner

Author: ally keer  //  Category: Apple, NDS, iPhone

I’ve been debating jumping to Photoshop CS6 for awhile. I’ve had every version of PS since version 1 way back in the distant past and have really looking for someone to show me what the differences between CS5 and CS6 were in an easily understandable way.

To help solve my dilemma, I grabbed a copy of Learn Photoshop CS6 Quickstart edition for the iPad. It’s a US $5.00 video tutorial with about 2 hours of videos covering Camera Raw, the new Content Aware tools, HDR, black and white conversions, and the new blur and lighting filters.

French landscape photographer Serge Ramelli is an engaging teacher, and I find I learn more from a video that reading a book. Ramelli keeps it simple, although sometimes he assumes a bit more knowledge than a new user might have. In addition to the videos, you can download the files used in the tutorials and try the techniques yourself.

I learned quite a bit in a short time, and the app answered my questions about whether or not I should upgrade (I should). While my new iPad screen has the very sharp Retina display, I found that I really wanted a larger presentation. Apple AirPlay to the rescue! The videos look great on my 46″ LCD screen via the Apple TV.

Ramelli has other video tutorials, including learning HDR, Photoshop CS5, and basic landscape photography. There are also some free previews available to download and sample. I’ve looked at some of these videos, and they are consistently high value in terms of content but they don’t get too technical. It’s pretty easy to walk away with new techniques you might have never discovered.

All these Ramelli tutorials are universal apps, but I think the iPhone screen is just too small for worthwhile viewing. The CS6 Quickstart is a 333 MB download and requires iOS3 or greater.

Wii U: Nintendo To Reveal New Info Tonight

Author: Arthur Ricky  //  Category: Games and Players, Nintendo, PS3, Wii, Xbox

Unexpected reveal comes just hours before Nintendo’s E3 press conference.

Nintendo will show ‘new information about the Wii U’ on its Nintendo Direct website tonight.

In an unexpected pre-E3 reveal, Nintendo’s video comes just a few hours before the company’s E3 press conference.

The video, hosted by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, will go live at 11pm BST / 6pm EST.

Not much has been seen of Nintendo’s latest console since its unveiling at last year’s E3, save for rumours of a minor design change and a possible name change.

These could be the subject of tonight’s video; we’re also hoping to see a glimpse of Nintendo’s first batch of first party Wii U games.

You can see the video here.

A load of new games have been revealed in the run up to this year’s E3 including a new Gears Of War, Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2, Skyrim DLC Dawngaurd and a ‘mature’ Star Wars game, Star Wars 1313.

Who needs E3 anyway?

Catch a glimpse of an iPhone assembly line

Author: Arthur Ricky  //  Category: Apple, iPhone

Chinese news site ifeng has managed to boldly go where few, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, have gone before — inside of the Zhengzhou Foxconn facility to get a peek at how iPhones are made. There’s nothing new that we haven’t seen on ABC’s Nightline regarding the factory, as The Verge points out, but the video does provide a good sense of how big one of these factories are and offers a glimpse into how iPhones are produced. Check out the full video below, but no English subtitles are provided.

The TUAW TV Live chat room regulars are a rowdy bunch. Whether it’s urikelman, drallgood, harumph, benroethig, docrock, lvreefkpr, macmommy, verso, ericasadun or any of a constantly changing group of participants who is chatting, there’s always a lot of back and forth talk about whatever the topic happens to be. The discussion often goes off the show topic, which is great — it keeps me on my toes.

Well, today I’ve got a few topics to chat about, but most of the discussion is going to be directed by the IRC chat. If you’re watching the show on Ustream you can use the Ustream chat tool that’s embedded just below. If you’re watching on Justin.tv, you’ll want to use an IRC client like Colloquy, LimeChat, or Textual to participate.

Bethesda has announced the Dawnguard expansion for Skyrim, with more details of the DLC incoming at E3.

Skyrim’s first DLC will named Dawnguard as rumoured, with the expansion hitting Xbox 360 this summer, Bethesda has announced.

Skyrim DLC’s Xbox exclusivity was confirmed last month with Bethesda admitting it had “been hard at work on creating the first set of game add-ons that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. TUAW TV Live: Hardware, accessories, and "fabulous new products in the pipeline"

Author: Arthur Ricky  //  Category: Apple, iPhone

Welcome back to another hour of fun, live discussion on TUAW TV Live!

Today my topics will range from the flood of hardware and accessories that have made their way to the legendary TUAW Labs to the curious line uttered by Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday. Cook noted that Apple is “shipping the best products ever, and we have some fabulous new products in the pipeline.”

What those products could be is a matter of speculation, and it would be fun during the show to hear your “outside the box” ideas about what new and completely mind-boggling products could be coming out of Cupertino in the future. Apple has created a new market segment for tablets and redefined what a smartphone is, and now the TUAW TV hive mind just needs to figure out what totally off-the-wall, gotta-have-it product we could see soon.

Below, you’ll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.
